About the Project:
Project: Scalable Renovate Solution for GitLab
Responsibilities:
- Define and design the target architecture of the Renovate solution
- Design a scalable operating model capable of supporting tens of thousands of GitLab repositories
- Architect self-hosted Renovate, distributed workers/runners, job scheduling and caching
- Design solutions for GitLab API and external registry rate-limit handling
- Develop an automated repository discovery and onboarding approach
- Define and maintain central, version-controlled Renovate configurations and shared presets
- Establish update strategies, grouping rules, time windows and auto-merge policies
- Ensure security and compliance requirements, including secure credential management and least-privilege access
- Define and implement prioritisation of security-relevant and CVE-driven updates
- Establish monitoring, logging, dashboards and operational KPIs
- Plan and coordinate the rollout: pilot → rollout waves → full coverage
- Own project planning, roadmap, prioritisation and rollout management
- Coordinate stakeholders across GitLab platform operations, Security, development teams and management
- Perform technical reviews of the implementation and make key architectural decisions
- Coach and support engineers throughout the implementation
- Contribute to documentation, guidelines and developer enablement/training
- Work hands-on on prototypes and critical technical implementation questions
Requirements:
- Several years of experience as a Solution Architect, Lead Architect or Senior DevOps Engineer
- Strong experience with GitLab, preferably in large-scale environments
- Practical experience with Renovate or a comparable automated dependency management solution
- Strong DevOps and CI/CD background
- Experience designing scalable, distributed and highly automated solutions
- Solid understanding of infrastructure and platform architecture
- Experience with APIs, authentication, credential management and security best practices
- Experience with monitoring, logging and observability
- Proven project management and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to operate effectively as both a technical lead and project manager
- Hands-on and solution-oriented mindset
- Fluent English
Nice to Have:
- Enterprise-level experience with Renovate
- Kubernetes and containerisation experience
- Cloud infrastructure experience
- Experience delivering large-scale rollout or migration projects involving a high number of repositories
